Time to tally up your family tree for 2014

New Years is an excellent time to tally up your family tree for 2014. The goal of this exercise is to calculate the percentage of ancestors you know of up to your 7th Great Grandparents.

I've added a little guide to calculating your family tree in less than an hour if you have a tree on Ancestry.com.

View the family tree pedigree view for one of your parents

The last generation is your 3rd Great-Grandparents.

As you click the arrow after each 3rd GGP, their branch opens to show up to the 7th generation.

Count how many 4th, 5th, 6th, & 7th GGPs you have and added them to the box indicated on this chart

how many ancestors possible for 4th - 7th generation using this chart:
4th column - 2
5th column - 4
6th Column - 8
7th Column - 16

Complete one of these for each parent.

Add it to the chart and calculate your percentage

Happy New Years!!
May you break down many brick walls in 2014!!!!

Frances Alcock Hutchins (1612-1694) - Accused Haverhill Witch

I couldn't think of a better day to dance this family skeleton out of the closet.

Frances (Alcock) Hutchins, daughter of George & Anna (Hooker) Alcock, was born in England around 1612. She left Southhampton, England on the ship Bevis in May 1636 as a servant to Richard Drummer. During her voyage, Frances worked with another servant, John Hutchins. They married the following year and raise a large family in Newbury & Haverhill, Massachusetts.

At the age of 80, Frances was accused of practicing witchcraft by Timothy Snow, Ann Putham Jr., and Mary Walcott. Justice Dudley Bradstreet issued an arrest warrant on August 18, 1692 and Frances was picked up by Constable William Starling the next day. She would soon be transported to Salem and be reunited with her 76 year old sister, Ann (Alcock) Foster, who had been detained in the Salem Dungeon since July 15.

On December 3rd of 1692, Ann died while waiting to be hanged as a confessed witch. Perhaps fearing that his mother might die before receiving a trial, Samuel Hutchins, along with his brother in law, Joseph Kingsberry, offered a 200 pound bond on the 21st to High Sheriff George Corwin in Salem for her freedom.

Late Night Finds: Richard Hazard (1807-1879)

Looks like I'm off to order my 3rd Great-Grandfather's submitted Declaration of Intent & Character Reference Report from Ontario County, New York. He is one of my biggest brick walls. Born somewhere in Ireland between 1807 - 1815 (averaged by various vital records), Richard  married Anna Brady in Rochester, Monroe, New York on 30 Mar 1846. Richard & Anna traveled around New York (Ontario & Orange County mainly) while their family grew to 9. They finally settled in Rochester, Monroe, New York in the late 1860's and started a coopering business.

I have researched several clusters of Hazards living around Rochester, New York over the last few years but could not 100% confirm any relationship to Richard Hazard. I was excited to see another Hazard on the list. Perhaps John F. Hazard is his father, a brother, or maybe a uncle or cousin.I am so excited to get my hands on this file!!

Fingers crossed my Hazard brick wall comes tumbling down before my summer road trip to Monroe County, New York. I just might have to schedule a detour to Ontario, New York as well.

Have a wonderful weekend researching!!

One year anniversary!!

One year ago today, I brought Twisted Twigs on Gnarled Branches Genealogy to Facebook. I have had so much fun! I have met some amazing people, enjoyed sharing my adventure while researching my own family history, and adored reading all the comments left.

As genealogists, we know that life can be short. Researching genealogy has been a passion of mine for decades. I remember sitting in one of my 8 am Medical Technology classes one year ago. I feverishly wrote an email, before class started, to a newly discovered distant cousin who's family though my 2nd Great Grandmother died as a baby. My professor came over and mentioned that he had the same look in his eyes when he started his Medical Technology classes. Something clicked. While I enjoy studying medicine and hoped to become a physician, I would most likely be preoccupied with thoughts of probate records to obtain and cemeteries I had yet to visit. I walked out of that class and never looked back. I am currently applying to Wayne State University to receive a Master in Library and Information Science degree and hope to become a certified genealogist in the next year.

I want to thank everyone who visits Twisted Twigs on Gnarled Branches Genealogy. I sincerely appreciate all of you!
